Decoding the Pros and Cons of Technology Use in Childhood: A Closer Look at the JAMA Study
The JAMA study published earlier this year found that using digital and social media technology positively and negatively impacts children and adolescents' physical, mental, and social well-being. On the positive side, the study found that technology can foster beneficial interactions and relationships, provide avenues for self-expression, give children access to educational materials, and increase their access to social support. However, on the flip side, the study suggests that technology can also decrease physical activity, increase feelings of loneliness and social isolation, and increase cyberbullying. The study concluded that more research is needed better to understand technology's effects on children and adolescents.
The JAMA study
Researchers from the University of Alberta in Canada conducted the JAMA study. They used survey data from over 5,000 adolescents aged 12–17 across Canada to examine the impact of digital and social media technology usage on their physical, mental, and social well-being.
