Shifting to Personalized Learning and Competency-Based Education: A Leadership Strategy

K12 education often advocates for personalized learning and differentiated instruction, but, in practice, this can only be easy to enact with the necessary systems and structures. For example, if a school has no support systems for students who are struggling to keep up, they are unlikely to be able to actualize the goal of differentiated instruction. To make these values a reality, the school leadership must create support systems that allow students to make up work and access extra help if necessary.

Leadership strategy

One leadership strategy for shifting to personalized learning or competency-based education would be for school leaders to create a vision statement that outlines the desired changes, goals, and objectives for such an approach. This statement could be used to guide decision-making and also provide a reference point for assessing progress. In addition to this vision statement, school leaders should create implementation plans detailing the steps necessary to successfully shift to a different form of instruction. These plans should include training teachers, revising curriculum and assessment, and changing classroom management structures.
