Inequities in access and participation persist.

Student access to computer science education, or CS, increased over the past year, with 53% of high schools now offering at least one foundational computer science course (up from 51% last year). Even more promising, student participation in computer science showed a 23% increase from last year’s enrollment.

However, there are still significant disparities in access and participation. When broken down by student demographic, only 15% of Black, Hispanic, and Native American students are taking computer science courses, compared to 28% of white students. And, although more women and girls are taking computer science courses, their representation lags behind that of their male counterparts.

The 2022 State of Computer Science Report also examines teacher preparation, infrastructure, and support. Specifically, 40% of states do not require teacher certification in computer science, and only 41% of schools have adequate teacher support and infrastructure. Teachers and students alike cannot fully benefit from computer science education without the necessary resources.
